Electric, diesel or LPG – which drive type fits?
Electric, diesel or LPG? The drive type is the most important decision when buying a forklift – it determines where the truck can work, its running costs and its handling. Here is the short orientation from practice:
Electric forklifts – the standard for indoors
Quiet, emission-free and low-maintenance: for use in halls, warehouses and food-grade environments there is no way around the electric forklift. Modern batteries last a full shift, and the energy cost per hour is well below that of combustion engines. Bear in mind: plan for charging times and charging infrastructure, and for permanent outdoor use make sure the truck is equipped accordingly. When buying used, look closely at the condition and age of the battery – it is the most expensive wear part.
Diesel forklifts – power for outdoors
When it comes to heavy loads, ramps, uneven yards and continuous outdoor use, diesel plays to its strengths: high power, instantly available, independent of charging breaks – refuel and carry on. Indoors it is off limits because of the exhaust fumes. Ideal for construction yards, timber and building material trade, agriculture and outdoor loading.
LPG forklifts – the flexible one
The LPG forklift is the all-rounder between the two worlds: as powerful as a combustion truck, but with lower emissions – and therefore permitted in well-ventilated halls. If you regularly switch between indoors and outdoors, LPG is often the best choice. Changing the gas bottle takes only minutes, and no charging or fuelling infrastructure is needed.

- Indoors only: electric
- Outdoors only, heavy loads: diesel
- Alternating between indoors and outdoors: LPG
